“In the early years of the last century, technology was providing artists with resources that were as new as their modern styles. Masonite was one of the most prevalently used of the new materials. This manufactured hardboard, which lies beneath the paint of innumerable 20th century artworks, was invented in Laurel, Mississippi, in 1924 by William H. Mason. In celebration, the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, founded in Laurel in 1923, presents this exhibition of American paintings on Masonite.”

Over 25 ADAA member galleries from 64th through 82nd streets will open their doors to the public for a collaborative event showcasing some of the most dynamic exhibitions in New York City this season.
The Palmer Museum of Art, University Park, Pennsylvania, From the Rooftops: John Sloan and the Art of a New Urban Space, February 3 - May 12, 2019, traveled to The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls, New York, June 15 - September 15, 2019.
John Sloan was preoccupied with the New York City rooftop perhaps more than any other American artist in the early decades of the twentieth century. This major loan exhibition offers the first in-depth examination of Sloan’s career-long interest in the urban rooftop and expands on the visual culture of “the city above the city” with examples by notable contemporaries, including George Ault, Edward Hopper, William Glackens, and Reginald Marsh. Organized by the Palmer Museum of Art, the exhibition is accompanied by a publication and will travel to The Hyde Collection.

NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, William J. Glackens and Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Affinities and Distinctions, October 21, 2018 - May 19, 2019, traveled to the Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, Tennessee, June 22 - September 22, 2019.
One of America’s leading modern artists, painter William Glackens (1870-1938) had a keen interest in the work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir that has long been recognized. He saw the French Impressionist’s works in New York galleries as early as 1908 and had unique access to the growing collection of his friend and colleague, Albert C. Barnes. However, Glackens’ specific debt to the art of this important French modernist has never been fully explored. William Glackens and Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Affinities and Distinctions fills this void by bringing together 25 works by each artist that illuminate Renoir’s influence on Glackens’ artistic development. It also reveals how changes in Glackens’ work after 1920 illustrate his response to Renoir’s late work, as well as that of other important European modernists in Barnes’ collection in order to forge his own distinctive American modernism. On view at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale from October 21, 2018 through May 19, 2019, the exhibition defines Glackens’ late style for the first time (c.1920 to 1938), and also sheds light on the history of taste in American collecting from the late-19th to the mid-20th century.
William J. Glackens and Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Affinities and Distinctions is organized by NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and is curated by Barbara Buhler Lynes, Ph.D., Sunny Kaufman Senior Curator. Following its presentation in Fort Lauderdale, the exhibition will also travel to the Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, Tennessee from June 22 - September 22, 2019.
